Holy son of Jorel. I feel it's been at least 3 months since I talked to you, PC Screen, about my musical musings... Well HELLO Kentland cult-followers! Monthy dues are collected on 8/1.
Anyway... How do I begin? Ummm, well - we're still playing shows, and making music. How about that?
RED POP FURY - NJothing more to be said. We have a website, not updated, but still there to go spend 5minutes at. We've played a lot of "off the radar" shows in the last few months - and it's always exactly what you would expect: Spontaneous, loud, cool songs, greatest banter known to mankind. The legend lives on with a couple of shows you may have missed, or will check out via the posted dates. www.redpopfury.com
FROSTING:: After being dubbed one of IE's "Best releases for 2013" Spiv has begun sitting down with a guitar, looking at it, seeing that it's mid-2015. Inspiration strikes at the strangest moments. More to come.... www.frostingusa.com
PETTY CASH: Petty Cash is playing SAUSAGE FEST. There is absolutely nothing else to say that can rival that statement. www.pettycashband.com
VON ETHER: On 8/2/2015 Von Ether hits the studio to commence recording tracks for..... Details to follow www.vonether.com
SIMPLE SIMON: It's that time of year - Simons are planning the 20th anniversary of the 1995 release "FOCUS". Seeing that FOCUS was a full length release, yet only 9 tracks, the SIMONS have decided to do a DOUBLE WHAMMY 20th anniversary with FOCUS and the KING EP (released 1999/2000, then re-released 2008) So yes, two albums per se, one giant rock and roll show. Look for October/November billing.
BLACKMAKER: Spiv and Jeff Randal and Tony and Gutrich shared a text thread recently
Outside of that, I have to admit - Personally I stay quite busy with many facets of music, as I have since I was 15yrs old. Playing solo acoustic shows, running sound systems, sitting in here and there, and of course playing monstrous rock and roll shows - C'mon - I get to do it with a 1976 Les Paul Black Beauty... Regardless, I have also been very fortunate to be able to live the life of a Dad/Husband/Sibling, etc. It's quite a game of tetris to keep everything running smoothly. Trust me, there are bumps in the road (sometimes giant f'n craterous pot holes), but I couldn't have thought of delivering this type of email when I started out in music at that young age.. Passionate, precarious, poor, provoking, provocative, prosperous, poignant, prodigal, picky, pain in the a**. This IS rock and roll!

Holy Hyatt! Spiv is kickin' it hard core at Hyatt Magnificent Mile in Chicago this month. They've added some weekend evening slots (Fridays/Saturdays 9-11PM) So make a dinner date of it and come on down to the cozy, cool confines of the Hyatt lounge and catch Spiv right out of acoustic hell playing a bizarre mix of exactly what you would expect a rad cat like him to play.
Simons do... The Kinks??? Hells yeah. The Simons, as well as some other fantastic bands, will be playing a "night of the music of the KINKS" at Fitzgeralds Nightclub Sidebar in Berwyn IL. Each band plays 3-4 tunes... What a rock snd roll way to spend your THURSDAY! April 30

The debut Show of Kari Von Ether And The Obdurate Masses, otherwise known as VON ETHER featuring Kentland's own SPIV on guitar is Tues. Mar. 10 at Martyrs in Chicago. Comparisons like "Heart meets The Doors", or "Tori Amos forms an old school rock band". You get the jist. Short sets, three cool bands, hip place to play in Chi-town!

SIMPLE SIMON: Thanks to everyone who came out to Milwaukee at Cactus Club on Jan. 17 to see the Simons kick out the jams with our good friends, Black Belt Theater. It's always great to play rock and roll with bands from your genre and generation. Lots of new friends, fans and another chapter in the Simon book of LIFE, LOVE and ROCK AND ROLL.
More Simons' Music on the horizon? Yes.. The conversation is underway and the meetings have begun. Stay Tuned!
Kari VON ETHER and the Obdurate Masses WTF? Although I may have blurbed about this in past infoblasts - I'll review. Basically a good friend of mine, Nick Kitsos (BoDeans, Poi Dog Pondering) called me if I would like to get involved with a band where we would be outnumbered by women. I said yes. Ha! Seriously, as these things go, Nick turned me on to a literal group of super cool songwriters/musicians that have been in the Chgo scene for as long as myself. Well, after a few off the radar bookings at local watering holes, the band re-named, shifted a couple of members, and now has a cool show on the books. Come see what it's all about. Martyrs, Chicago. Tue. Mar 10. Here's the bare bones shell of a website http://vonether.com/home
RED POP FURY When You're the absolute best and most entertaining musical entity in existence, there's just nothing to add.
Outside of that, always trouble brewing in the Kentland Camp! Come out to a show sometime!
Simple Simon The 20th Anniversary of the Bitter Taste Of Americana record was one for the books. The energy level was off the rails as the three amigos played BTOA in its entirety quite flawlessly (I suppose the practices helped!) To a packed house, everyone will remember BTOA in a new light. Special thanks to Dino Manzella for running the FOH sound, complete with digital tidbits such as the intro to "workin" and "M.O.D" pumped through the system. We'd like to also thank our stage guests for our "let's play a bunch of stuff from around '94 with some long time friends of ours " -the set closed out the night quite memorably. Thanks to Brendan Golden, Todd Smith, Timmy Lydon, Marty Casey, Bill Brinias, and Jayh Johnson. And without saying - thanks to all in attendance. What a night.

Simple Simon Sat. Jan 17, 2015 Club Garibaldi Milwaukee WI W/ Black Belt Theater Details coming soon http://clubgaribaldi.com/
SIMPLE SIMON: As if you didn't know - The Bitter Taste Of Americana show on Sat. Nov. 22 would be one of the pinnacle shows for you to get your butts to in what's left of 2014. In brief, the Simons' first record "Funky Dog" put them on the map in Chicago and opened ears to this new band, called "the Simons" on the streets. BTOA blew the doors off of the city and region in many ways and spawned a long history of crazy shows, DIY touring, media notice, radio notice, etc. Despite the fact that a "major record deal" was never inked after being courted quite frequently after BTOA hit, the Simons never got discouraged and pressed on hard with a very fulfilling, never ending, enduring musical life that still stands vibrant. The fan base, especially in the BTOA days grew exponentially and still stays warm to the Simons and vice-versa. There is an excellent write up of the 11/22 show, linked here: http://ymlp.com/zM79sR Also, The Simons , or a member thereof, will be conducting an interview with Fearless Radio Wednesday, 11/19/2014 at 4pmhttp://www.fearlessradio.com/
Simons on Youtube?? Hells yeah. Thanks to our comrade John Postlewait for the killer footage. Granted, the audio is solely from the stage cameras and is not hi-def by any means ( the Simons tend to get a little loud...) Regardless, this is a modern day glimpse of the SIMON machine in true-to-life form. Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZujlI_usWw
In other news, The 7th and latest Simons release "College Songs Everybody Knows" should be up and available at the Kentland music CDBABY warehouse (Simons page) very soonhttp://www.cdbaby.com/Artist/SimpleSimon . Looking ahead, Simons have booked a show JAN (17th) @ Club Garibaldi in Milwaukee, WI with some good friends in a band called Black Belt Theater, containing members of long time Simons friends in the now defunct band, Bender. Road Trip!
FROSTING: There's been more chit chat about firing up the writing machine and the team is in good spirits. In the Kentland world, there are only so many days in the calendar available, and most likely Frosting will hit the drawing board post Simons BTOA20. Stay tuned!
REDPOP FURY: What's to talk about when you're THE BEST?
KENTLAND RELATED: JOHN POSTLEWAIT Many know him, many don't. In the Kentland Records world, progress would be very much slower without him. Long time fan /friend of every Kentland band, and Brother to a killer bass player, Dan Postlewait (Javelinas), John is as much a part of our family as anyone on the roster and in the "offices". John has been Kentland's long time artwork/layout/graphics guru. So, for those of you whostill hold CD's, break out Simons, Frosting, Javelinas, Blackmaker - It's all John. He created the official KENTAND RECORDS logo, as well as the artwork for Blackmaker's "Staggering To The Surface", Frosting's "Fresh Frosting" as well as the first Javelinas logo and so much more. John also has been shooting video/photos of Kentland bands for years, and most recently shot the Simons @ Hammerfest, House of Blues Chicago 2014. Link above and here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZujlI_usWw He's also working on a "rockumentary" of sorts - based on many a Kentland band and their incredible journeys, still in the works.
Let's get to the MEAT. John is also a songwriter/singer and over the past years has called up the Kentland Army amongst other friends/family members to complete his debut solo record "Apostlethwate". We're all super happy for John, and were extremely proud to be a part of the giant undertaking that is - making a record / collection of songs from the first note until the record is in your hand. Here's John's personal blurb about "Apostlethwate":
FOR KENTLAND RECORDS
Hi, I’m John Ellis Postlewait. Maybe you’ve seen me at Kentland shows, maybe you know me directly. I’ve served Kentland as one of the art guys, designing CDs for Simple Simon, Blackmaker, Javelinas and Frosting. Over ten years ago, I sat down with my cheap guitar and tried to learn how to write songs as good as my friends. Songs about the ups and downs, the beautiful and the harrowing, all part of my average but singular life. Then I began recording my songs with the help of my talented friends and family, including the rock gods in Simple Simon and other Kentland artists, who pulled me along from humble open mic guy to humble album maker. Some played on it, some helped it sound better, but all of them inspired and elevated me. Long live their music, too.
So now I have a CD! Think roots rock with some hard rock edge and a bit of country introspection. If you’re interested in buying it, see the links below. With the hard copy you get all the lyrics and some cool artwork. Or are you more modern and selective? They also sell MP3s.

SIMPLE SIMON 20 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF "BITTER TASTE OF AMERICANA" (tent) Friday, Oct 17, 2014 Quenchers Chicago Details to follow..........
News: We hope you're all having a wonderful rock and roll filled summer, or whatever it is you do. Ha! Anyway, much thanks to those who have come out to support any of our bands/artists - it is you that keeps us doing what we love to do. Ok, let's get to some reviews and the DIRT.
SIMPLE SIMON: The Simons show at Elbo Room was a welcome blast. 'Twas the 10yr reunion of the "Stars Motel EP" release of our good Kentland friends, The Gelheads. It was definitely "flashbackey" in the sense that all bands on the bill were alive and well 10yrs prior, Elbo Room being a staple club. Simons tore it up and it's always great to kick out the jams. SIMONS 20YR celebration - PART II. 20yrs ago, Simple Simon released their second full length "Bitter Taste Of Americana" The record definitely put them on the map in Chicago/Midwest, amidst airplay, sold out shows and lots of off the radar record sales. The TENTATIVE date is Oct. 17th, 2014 at Quenchers in Chicago. Quenchers was chosen once again, because the 20yr show last year was off the reils. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Stay tuned, details will surely follow as the date approaches.
FROSTING: Well, the ingredients are still on the table, and the recipe book is still open. The chefs have to get it together and come up with a new menu? Wow, that was lame. Well, despite the fact that the band is now offically a 2pc (bassists looking?) The towel hasn't been thrown in yet. There is definitely enough material for a third release, and wheels are spinning. Tim and Spiv have been chatting about the next step - Time shall tell ALL.
Redpop Fury/Petty Cash: Two of the most unique entertainment conglomerates to ever walk the face of the Midwest have been on a roll - cool gigs, more on the calendar. Come out to the show and experience the MAGIC yourselves! Check the listing for gig dates.

Simple Simon Sat. July 19 Gelheads reunion show Elbo Room Chicago
Howdy y'all! Been a while! Had a few things on the books the last few months - some shows definitely in the underground rock and roll "shoulda been there" concerts! We'll start with Simple Simon @ House of Blues - endless comments, new fans about what a pinnacle show the Simons tore up at such a great venue. I'll admit - it was definitely one for the books. Frosting IPO fest, Red Line Tap - Quite possibly one of the finest 35 minutes of rock and roll FROSTING has ever put out in a live environment. Kentland Power trios were in force the last few months for sure!
SIMPLE SIMON: Attack re-pressing has arrived! Pick your CD copy up at any Kentland related show (talk to spiv) or get them via CDBABY. Simons proud to be a part of the Gelheads reunion show at Elbo Room, Chicago on Sat. July 19. Originally slated to be a BLACKMAKER reunion show - the start unfortunately didn't align for that to happen. Simons will definitely do the bill justice for our good ol' pals the Gelheads!
FROSTING: My, my, my, how things change. Sadly, We'll have to say good buy to current CANADIAN bassist - Jeff Peck. Jeff is re-locating to San Fransisco. The past years with Jeff on the bass have been fun as hell - He's a great musician, great guy and he's CANADIAN. We'll miss him like hell 'eh? Outside of that -No news is good news. Still planning on hitting the tape deck this summer with some fresh jams. Related: A couple of Frosting tracks have made it to a - gulp - horror film. "Dead Girls" Not sure how that all fits, but it's pretty cool press nonetheless. Hell, if Sting can have his music in a car commercial....
REDPOP FURY: One item of news - REDPOP FURY IS BACK AFTER 3 YEARS AT BALLY DOYLE IN DOWNERS GROVE. Everyone please come out and make it an event. You know after that long of a lapse - the band will be off the rails and the comedy will follow suit - indeed!
Other: keep an eye on the Kentland site from time to time, as it is summer time and gigs often pop up out of nowhere! That's about all here. Befriend us on Facebook, like us on likeable pages, buy cheap, expensive clothing on our Zazzle site, etc...

News! Some cool shows in the Kentland camp! Simons HOUSE OF BLUES, Chicago - May 10! Frosting - International POP Overthrow fest, 2014! Apr 11!
PLEASE phone first to gigs. Calendars are crazy, and update all the time.
There's a lot to talk about, yet not much in the same hand if that makes any sense. First and foremost, we need to round up the TROOPS to come out to House of Blues 5/10/2014. Simple Simon doesn't land bitchin' shows in a killer venue like HOB that often, so if you want to see a band still quite firey about their craft - in a venue that showcases rock and roll - YOU need to get your tickets and make a date/double date/triple date/solo, whatever - come see the SIMONS rip the building apart.
FROSTING is looking very forward to their LATE show at Red Line Tap for the 2014 International Pop Overthrow Festival. David Bash has been throwing this eries of shows around the USA for years, promoting the unsung, unsigned amazing under the radar talent that IS the pulse of rock and roll music in the USA. FROSTING is proud to be a part of the IPO 2014!
Yours truly, SPIV has landed a quite interesting string of acoustic shows as the Hyatt downtown Chicago. Early, free sushi, posh, Hyatt-y along with Spivtacular cranking out about as much 1970's chill acoustic rock music as one can stomach... yum!

News: As the above headline stated, FROSTING made the cut for "Best of 2013" in the Illinois Entertainer. Albeit Frosting II is a solid rock n roll record, it was submitted in Nov 2012, and reviewed early in 2013. Twas a cool thing to see that even after a year amidst hundreds of local submissions, some with outstanding reviews, FROSTING still made the cut. Something stuck with someone somewhere! www.frostingusa.com

SIMPLE SIMON 2013 sparked the 20th anniversary of the debut release "Funky Dog". The event was celebrated by a sold out, off the rails show at Quenchers in Chicago. Anyone in attendance, many from several states/regions, witnessed a band reinvoigorated and absolutely on fire. Simons performed 'Funky Dog" track by track in it's entirety as well as some of the bands personal favorites fromt he other releases and of course many fan shout outs, along with a smattering of killer cover songs. Simply an amazing page in the long history of Simple Simon. Thanks to everyone who was a part of that stellar night! As many know, 2014 is the 20th anniversary of the Simons second record, 205 is the 20th of the 3rd, 2016 of the fourth.... lots of planning to do!
On another note, that show debuted the release of the Simons greatest hits (of sorts) "College Songs Everybody Knows". For the hardcore Simon fan, it is a MUST HAVE. For the newbie that wants a general introduction to what Simple Simon is about, it is equally a must have, seeing that it spans the first four releases and the record is sonically explosive. Although not quite yet on Itunes or CDBaby, it will be available in the first quarter of 2014. We will release details accordingly. If you DESPERATELY need one, email Spiv at firstname.lastname@example.org and we can work something out via carrier pigeon.
BLACKMAKER Talks in 2013 solidified the unification to set up a few reunion shows for 2014. Blackmaker for those who don't know or what the band was about: 5pc rock and roll comprised of two bands (Simple Simon, Vibe Tribe). Recorded tons of music, toured, blah blah. Think urban rock in the vein of Helmet meets the rootsy vibe of Black Crowes. Cool band fer sure. All that said, over the last months band members have been sifting through hundreds of unlabeled burned cds, uploading lost tracks, rare recordings and hundreds of photos. Jeff Randall set up an official Blackmaker facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/blackmakerjams The mountainous tasks of assembling/printing what will probably be a double disc of unreleased/live/demo cuts, as well as the logistical quagmire of rehearsals and setting up shows will begin in 2014. Stay tuned for info on that front!
FROSTING Sometimes bands just have to go through the wringer of reinventing/reorganizing for monhts on end. Frosting has definitely been put to that test. Originally a 6pc band, then 5pc, then 4pc, now power trio. All in that time the band was able to release two very cool records, Frosting and Frosting II. It's been about 6 months of soul searching, vision re-vamping, and way WAY too much thinking. Throwing in the towel was never an option for Spiv to say the least, but after a heart to heart, come to Jesus meeting in fall of 2013, remaining stalwart members Jeff Peck, Spiv and Tim Lydon will clean the slate and give it one more go come 2014. What direction will the band take? Who knows. Guitar bass and real drums is a good start in my book, regardless. Within the last 6mos, Tim Lydon has also diverted his druming tentacles to local power trio "Hard Kiss'. Although non-Kentland related, we wish him well in his new endeavors of rock. So, all that said - calendar tetris pending - time, determination and drive will calculate the next step in the Frosting chapter! www.frostingusa.com
RED POP FURY Can a band have four drummers? Red Pop Fury sure in Sam Hell can! Count 'em: Chris Glynn, Tim Lydon, Kris Gutrich, Rich Dang. 2013 was a cool year, but scattered with respect to the calendar for the band. Bars closing, calendar snafus etc... And our very own Flamboyant Tony has his hands in about 75 pots of things outside of rock and roll! No disrespect at all to my long time rock and roll partner Tony - but such is life and we all are hoping that his efforts in the many things he is involved in bear fruit. Hell, half of that stuff turns into gigs anyway, so it's all good. As growing adults and r'n rollers at heart - we have no choice but to spread our tentacles out creatively and take on non-band, career opportunities when they arise. In turn sometimes the things we love or have been doing for years (music) shift on the totem pole of priority. Look, we went through this with Kris Gutrich, Chris Glynn etc... life goes on. Red Pop Fury finds people that can fill the void and we continue to move forward. Our good friend Ryan Nelson and even Frosting bassist Jeff Peck have stepped up to the plate for REDPOP bass duty from time to time. Realistically the time has come to find a few more able bodied bassists/vocalists who can get in the redpop fury loop of players. Tony is absolutely irreplacable and remains our number one bassist/vocalist/frontman/consumate entertainer bar none. This is by no means a pink slip for flamboyant T - however the time has come to put out a feeler to some close friends on our mailing list who may be up for the challenge or may know someone up for the challenge. You MUST know what we do, how we do it and have seen us perform - no exceptions. We know hundreds of songs - obscure, difficullt, stupid, and a shitload of songs that no band in their right mind would ever play. ABSOLUTELY NO JOBBERS need apply. Music is fun, we are fun and this is NOT a job. Rock on!
PETTY CASH The ultimate Tom Petty/Johnny Cash high octane tribute of sorts is off of the respirator and back on the grid! Bub City in Chicago on 2/26/2014
Other news: You may have noticed a couple of calendar entries for a project called "The Disapointments" This is a new fun endeavor for Spiv. I got the call from my good drummer friend Nick Kitsos (BoDeans, Michael MCDermott...) that he was doing some loose jamming with some great local singers at his pad once every couple of weeks and if I had nuthin going on, come on by. Been about two months of scattered jam sessions - really fun. Fun to just be a guitar player and nothing else. no worries about bookings, websites, mailings etc. I just get to bring a guitar and have fun making noise. Been a while since I did that and it feels cool. What does this mean? Who knows. All I can say is that It's fun like music was when I played as a kid. Lead singer/songwriter Kari Nelson secured somewhat of a "residency" for the project every last Sunday at a place called Friendly Tap in Berwyn. Come by once in a while. We only know 6 songs so it's not a long show.....
News: Where does a grown Man start. Well, for those interested with regards to why Kentland mail hasn't ben sent in two months??
I confess: There were gigs that we played that were not posted. There were events not talked about. I apologize to anyone that would be affected by out lil' band hub not disclosing our whereabouts. Although I like to keep things strictly music-positive via the Kentland portal... I will spill my guts, and explain this lapse in communication/promotion strictly on my end.
Those of you who know me personally or via Facebook, know that it's been a rough summer/fall transition. I sadly lost my Brother, Dave to complications from several strokes, quickly deteriorating him since Summer. He passed in Sept, he was 47. Devastating loss, indeed. Since June/July things have been in a bit of a frenzy in my world... Life has kind of been like throwing a deck of cards in the air and not cleaning up the mess. Lost focus etc.
A bit about Dave, my older Brother. The bond was always there and grew closer as we got older. As kids, I remember Dave Dj'ing my Mother's 45's on the equivalent of a My Pretty Pony turntable, and remember him recording songs off of his boombox onto cassette before going to grammar school. I also remember the endless arguments as brothers in our first band (I have respect for Oasis on that front, although we were cooler...) Dave's dream of being a DJ came to fruition with his time at the internet dance radio station that he was a pinnacle founding member, Fusion Radio. You can pull up his dedication page here via Fusion: http://www.fusionradio.fm/onair/davetripper/
Even though we talked at length about rock n roll, radio, etc... I had no idea of what a huge impact he had, worldwide. People would fly to the USA to meet him, send him gifts, etc... He had an enormous following. Crazy. I can see why - he was 100% personality, on and off the mic. He will be truly missed, and the healing process is slow. Facebook users, there's a nice tribute page set up for dave at this link: https://www.facebook.com/davetripper.tribute?fref=ts
All that said, tears wiped aside... as I know my older brother would beat me with a wiffle bat if I didn't man up and keep my rock 'n roll torch burning. So - in honor of my wiffle bat wielding brother, my rock and roll world grinds on! Rest in peace, Dave.
